How to care for your Jiko

Jabali Jikos are high quality Jikos made of mostly mild steel, which is a type of steel that contains low carbon content. Here are some ways you can care for your Jabali Jiko:

  1. Keep it dry: Moisture is the enemy of mild steel, so it's important to keep your Jabali Jiko dry. Store it in a dry place and cover it to protect it from rain or other sources of moisture.

  2. Clean it regularly: Clean your Jabali Jiko regularly to prevent rust from forming. Use a wire brush or a piece of cloth to remove any dirt, soot, or ash buildup.

  3. Season it: Seasoning is the process of coating the surface of the steel with a layer of oil to protect it from rust. To season your Jabali Jiko, rub a thin layer of vegetable oil all over the surface and heat it up over a fire. Let it cool down and repeat the process several times.

  4. Use dry firewood: Use dry firewood or charcoal to prevent excessive smoke and soot build-up. Wet firewood can also cause corrosion and rust on your Jiko.

  5. Avoid using abrasive cleaners: Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners to clean your Jabali Jiko. This can damage the surface and make it more prone to rusting.

  6. Inspect it regularly: Inspect your Jabali Jiko for any signs of rust or damage, such as cracks or holes. If you notice any damage, repair it immediately to prevent further damage.

  7. Keep it away from water: Water is the biggest enemy of mild steel, so avoid exposing your Jabali Jiko to water or any other source of moisture. If it does get wet, dry it off immediately.
